What You Need to Know About Dogs on the Water

We are so very fortunate to live around so many bodies of water. Boating is a favorite family past time for many in the south. We have easy access to water and we have incredible weather almost year round. Boating is a past time that your pups can enjoy too. There is nothing cuter than a pup on the bow of a boat with their ears flapping back. It’s absolutely adorable to watch them have the time of their lives.

Dogs are natural swimmers but that doesn’t mean that they don’t life support gear just the same as your two-legged children. If anything happened on the boat and the dog fell overboard, you’d want them to have the best possible chance of survival and the only way to do that is to put on their doggie life jacket.

Here’s our biggest tip about life jackets… go BRIGHT. I’m not a fan of colors that blend in with the water, like blues and greys. You want to be able to easily spot your dog in the water as they may end up quite a distance away from you and/or the boat.

Here are a few of our favorites:

This one looks a little swiss army knife-esk but the red color will surely stand out against the blue water.

This is perhaps the most adorable of them all, it’s a pink doggie shark. This one is definitely Instagram worthy.

This one wins from a safety perspective. It’s bright yellow with multiple reflective stripes on the top and the sides. When you think of search and rescue, you want something that you can very easily identify in the water.

Our dogs are members of our families. Many people look for activities that they can bring the two-legged and four-legged kids along for. I love being out on the boat but it’s important to not get so caught up in the fun of it all that you forego safety precautions for the entire family. Your pups would thank you if they could talk.
